Cutting & Reining Information
Cutting is a equestrian event in the western riding style where a horse & rider are judged on their ability to separate a single animal away from a cattle herd & then the rider loosens the reins & it is entirely up to the horse to prevent the cow returning to the herd by blocking it in it’s attempts for 2:30 minutes. Once a cow gives up (ie, stops attempting to return to the herd), it is released & if the 2:30 is not up, horse & rider select another cow. It is customary to work 2 cows, 3 can also occur.
A cutting horse has innate “cow sense” & is quick & athletic. Any lighter horse breed (14.0hh+, no draft/exotic/fantasy breeds) may compete although the QH is the most common in real life.
Reining is a western riding competition for horses where the riders guide the horse through a precise pattern of circles, spins & stops. All work is done at a lope or gallop. It requires the horse to be responsive & in tune with its rider, whose aids should not easily seen and judges the horse on its willingness to be guided.
Any lighter horse breed (14.0hh+, no draft/exotic/fantasy breeds) may compete although the QH is the most common in real life.
